Serai Thai Restaurant at Shah Alam !

A short chit chat with Serai Satay Bar‘s owner Qistina revealed that their family restaurant – Serai Thai at Shah Alam serves one of the best Butter Prawn in Malaysia as voted by readers of The Star in 2008.
Because Shah Alam is too far for me and I am not familiar with the city, I never really dared to venture there. And the many number of roundabouts in Shah Alam is pretty scary for unfamiliar people too. But with the help of my new found gadget – a GPS unit loaded with malfreemaps, going to Serai Thai was no sweat.

Maybe due to Ramadhan month, the restaurant was said to be full when we called in to make a reservation at 7pm. After breaking fast hour the restaurant was almost empty and we were the only customers lol. This is the highly regarded Butter Prawn, priced at RM30 and had 7 medium sized prawns. Do you know that Butter Prawn’s recipe was created in Malaysia?

Now I wouldn’t say Serai Thai’s Butter Prawn is the best in Malaysia but it was good alright. I found the prawns to be a little tough, maybe overcooked. The desired springy texture in the prawn was just lacking.
That aside, the flavor and seasoning was right and nice and the presentation was great as well. You just gotta love the fluffy sweet butter strands.

Seafood Tom Yam @ RM14 – tasty albeit the disappointing presentation, my only complaint was the little amount of seafood given. Only a prawn, some slices of fish meat and squids were there.

Instead of having white rice, we opted to share a Pineapple Fried Rice @ RM9. It was a good decision, as it went well with the tom yam and butter prawns.

For vegetable, we chose SL’s favorite – Brinjal Belacan @ RM10. To be honest I never really liked brinjal but I still found it to be quite enjoyable lol.

Although a bit pricey @ RM6, the Thai Iced Tea was worth a try because of its refreshing taste. Unlike our local teh ais which is usually oversweet, the Thai Iced Tea’s sweetness level was just right.
The tea’s 3 layers reminded me of Sarawak Teh C Peng Special, which is also an enjoyable beverage.

For desserts we actually wanted to have the irresistible Tab Tim Grob (Red Rubies) but sadly it was already sold out for the day. So we settled for Chocolate Banana Parfait @ RM9 instead. Parfait is a dessert similar to sundae, prepared by layering ice cream with other ingredients.
At Serai Thai, they use vanilla and chocolate ice cream, banana, cornflakes and dark chocolate chip cookies as the layering ingredients. It was a satisfying dessert and we enjoyed it a lot, especially the chocolate ice cream. We couldn’t have enough of it.

The homey feel restaurant – the cushions are a nice touch, really.
